Baits

Sandeel

Best used live for Bass and Pollack though can be difficult to find - frozen works well - keep them cool in a flask or else they'll go soft. Use under a float over rough ground or on a rolling ledger on sand. Freelining for Bass is another favoured technique.

Ragworm

An excellent all purpose bait on it's own or as a cocktail with shell fish for example. Types available include King, Whites and Maddies - the latter being particular irresistible to Plaice, Flounder and Sole. Dig your own if your up to it otherwise costs about £10 per lb

Lugworm

Another fine bait, used to attract many species, can be dug or use a bait pump,

generally cheaper to buy, than Ragworm, again used in cocktails.

MACKEREL

Peeler crab

MORE INFO

Praised as the best bait around by many - collect them in spring/summer hiding near the shore under rocks etc or buy them for approx £1 each depending on size. Other types of crab such as Hermit, Swimmer and Spider also make fine baits. Use whole or cut up - you might want to bind to your hook using bait thread so that you don't lose the lot when casting - also helps to release the juices in a scent trail.

Squid

Excellent bait used whole or in strips for many species - obviously you must buy frozen - although fresh Cuttlefish is a good alternative if you find any washed up where you're fishing
